From the 8th of January until the 27th of February, we will be in Thiland. Please send any information about the possibilities for gigs or busking, where, when, etc... Also, any news about upcoming festivals, or events that might interest us.
Thanks for any help....

Hi Tony.

I'm headed there next week, currently working in Singapore, and going to visit an old friend and scope for a pitch. I'll let you know.

Tony,

I fell into contemplation/ relaxation/ beach mode in Thailand, and never got to check out the "pitch" I heard rumor of. Jake and Sophie, of Fairy Fire, told me they had had some very good luck on Ko Phi Phi, a small island off of Krabi which is riddled with tourists, and short on night entertainment. They were well treated by a local hotel: they got put up and fed in exchange for performing out front, where they could also hat.

Thailand culturally does not welcome outsiders taking money. I'm told that this will become an issue, and "sharing" your take (bribery or payoff) is common practice in many endeavors there. Walk gently, eyes open.

Jake and Sophie's take on it was that its a great place to be and to chill, not a place to go for money. Hilby was here last night and told me he did fine early on in Bangkok. Where are you going to be? I'm headed back for a month, from January 14 to February 18, with my daughter. Maybe we can get lunch together. I'm going to teach a few classes, but really going to relax and explore more. As I am interested in Thailand, though, I'd like to keep an eye open for a good pitch. I think I'll be spending time there more and more in the winters, and will probably want to keep my chops up.

You might want to contact Jimmy Wong, gwyndara@pacific.net.sg, and let him know you'll be around. He sets up the Singapore Fest, and sometimes has gigs.

Cheers, ks

Don't make yourself to many illusions about Ko Pha Ngan and Ko Samui either. Ko Samui is also pretty much developed and touristy and the stories of a more untouched Ko Pga Ngan are getting slightly out of date as well. It still is a relatively quiet island, but not the paradise (anymore) people may have been telling you about.
Thai people are clever and are just as happy and eager to embrace commercialism as anybody else in the world. With you being an easy prey - lacking knowlegde of local customs and language - they'll trap you in a local network of tourrorism in no time.
I had a good time on Ko Pha Ngan, but it required a change in attitude. No more mister nice guy, but mister tourrorist spending his money to make himself welcome on a tropical island. But I still want to return one day, so I bet you'll have a good time anyways...

Take care...

Hey Tony.

We fell out of the loop there for awhile, cruising Cambodia and blasting through Burma. We're in Ko Phi Phi, where we just did a half moon party show with Jake and Sophie of Fairy Fire. Are you around?
