I was born in SA and while I havent been there in a few years, I can give you some general tips. Some of these are common sense but worth the mention anyway...

do not wear anything that looks any bit valuable,

avoid driving at night,

if you have to drive at night, treat stop signs and red lights as yield signs... the police will understand and if you're sure there are no cars coming, dont even slow down,

be careful who you talk to and what you say, you dont want to irritate the wrong people

street crime is insane, keep tabs on your stuff.

Johannesburg has been labeled 'the most dangerous peace time city in the world' but if you use common sense you should be fine. its a beautiful city with a diverse group of people living there. If you are in johannesburg, check out four ways mall (its in the northern suburbs) and montecasino (right next to four ways mall). Also, check out the honeydew lion park.

Durban has some great beaches and shallow water.

Cape Town is the cosmopolitan city and the best place to make money busking. Check out Robben Island.

Head up to the kruger national park to catch the wild life. Even better, go to one of the private parks on the outskirts, try Djuma Game Reserve.
