I went in 07....
there was a draw each day around 10am i think?
in the weekends, you pay to play on the garden pitch ($20 I think now)
see you there...

Spin and Louise organize everything. You can play the mall during the day and there is a draw for that every morning then the garden is at night and you do pay to use the amp they set up down there.
The mall is HARD. It can be good at times but sometimes it just sucks. There are a few good shows at night in the garden and on the weekends it can really go off. The thing is there'll be about 30 or so people drawing for three spots in the garden. If you get it, it can be amazing, if not, your stuck in the mall.

hey kids, does anyone know the current deal on the Garden draw? Do you have to register in advance or can you show up and put your name in? I'm going to be in Oz in Feb and March and I'd like to work the fringe but only know what I can find out on the website and through the archives here, so any info you guys could add would be really helpful.
Thanks alot,
Cate

What I hear is there is no garden pitch this year, just the Mall.
It may have changed at the time of writing this, that's what I know from a few weeks ago
Nick
Would I be right in thinking that there's very little incentive for being there then?
(from a purely "street" perspective)

Yeah, it totally takes away a lot of the reason to go to Adelaide...but I hear that the mall isn't that bad as far as just street performing goes, so I still might give it a shot. Does anybody know how the street performing in Adelaide compares with the street in Melbourne?

Adelaide v's Melbourne
mmmmm they are both street pitches ( as is Sydney/Perth/Canberra/Darwin ) so just depends how good/confident you are in your abilities.

I'm pretty confident that I have realistic expectations. Like, I know that I have a really good show...on my home pitch. I know that it's not going to be as good away as it is at home. But, I also know that I have a good presence, I build good relationships with my audience and I have a great finale. I figure that after taking a beating while I figure how to make the things that work great on my home pitch work on other pitches, I'll end up with a better show and make some decent money.
I mean, I'm not expecting festival money, but I know that if I get a fair chance to get in the rotation and if there's a public that's ready to watch, I'll do ok.

Cate, just lower your expectations a little and you'll do fine. Australia is perhaps one of the most difficult places to work in the 'first world'.

I hear this a lot, but why is it so hard? Is it just a really slow build? Are the audiences hostile or just not easily impressed? Is it worse than working in Key West?

Cates going to Adelaide!!!!! That's awesome. Dave and I went last year. The garden pitch was great. Though you would only get like one show there a week. But if they aren't doing it this year I won't say anything about it.
The mall pitch has nothing to do with the festival at all but you can do shows every day. It's brutal. It was constantly over 100 degrees. So imagine the hottest days in boulder but hotter and every day of the week. Also, no one at the mall is there to just mill around. They are there to either shop or run to work....so that's obviously a problem.
Last year we were getting like 3 shows a day. Make sure you get time slots that are not in the sun. Sun slots are a death sentence. You sign up for timeslots in the morning at the "main pitch".
Some days it would work and we would do monster shows and other days it was like we'd never done a show before.
Also, if you can somehow shrink the amount of gear you carry around i would highly recommend it. Dragging your stuff around is brutal in the heat and none of the accommodations have elevators. They don't have air conditioning either. So i hope you like the heat.
Also, there is a buskers festival on the mall one of the weekends during the fringe and if you are not in it you cannot work that entire weekend. You can try to talk to mr spin about getting in however last year we sent him a handful of emails and didn't hear back to any of them.
You'll have fun and you'll make money. Send me an email if you have more questions.

Thanks for the info Alex, sounds like it'll be a challenge. Hopefully, this will be a good opportunity to make my show stronger.
I'm actually working on new, portable gear as we speak and hopefully, being a Florida native and working all those dates at the Aquarium will go a long way to helping me adapt to the heat.

The heat being a problem for you isn't as big of a problem as the heat being a problem for the people. It's literally so brutal that your crowd will simply not stand in it. So time your shows with the shade because its your only hope of getting off a show, otherwise you are screwed.

just found out that the main pitch thats inside the festival (which is the main reason to go) isn't operating this year.....

And I have hear that one of the 3 pitches in the mall (canopy, the only one with shape all day) is out. Apparently someone rent the space for commercial use the all month !
But as far as i know, they where trying to get an pitch that would replace the garden one... Dunno if its gonna be running this year.
Ask Tony Robers, he will have all the latest updates !!!
Laurent
