Singapore Straits Times (http://straitstimes.asia1.com.sg/singapore/story/0,4386,219826,00.html)

If busking is right up your street ...don't miss the Singapore Buskers' Festival, which runs for nine days and will begin with a colourful procession down Orchard Road

By Kelvin Wong

STREET performer Etienne McGinley loves making people laugh. And he plans to do just that now that he is here as part of an international entourage of buskers at the annual Singapore Buskers' Festival.

Now in its seventh year, the event will host buskers from 10 countries with daily performances that are expected to draw at least 600,000 spectators.

'It has won international awards...and reaffirms Singapore's reputation as a key lifestyle and events capital,' said Ms Staphnie Tang, director of organising company Gwyndara International, of the festival.

To launch the nine-day event tomorrow, there will be a procession down Orchard Road by street performers, stiltwalkers, masquerades and other song and dance acts.

Mr McGinley and 24 other international buskers, hailing from countries such as Japan, Hungary, the United States and Australia, will thrill spectators with their various stunts, including juggling acts, stilt and bicycle acrobatics, and sword-swallowing.

They will busk daily at Orchard Road, Marina Square and other venues along the Singapore River, including Clarke Quay, Boat Quay and Robertson Walk.

Mr McGinley, who was born in the US but grew up in France, will be juggling with his diabolo set - an hour-glass-shaped plastic object suspended on a string attached to two sticks.

The 30-year-old was trained in theatre and even did stints in a circus as a clown but switched to busking in 1997.

'This is a way for me to blend theatre and juggling and travel round the world, finding out what makes people laugh,' he said.

The street performances are free.

Donations tossed into performers' hats will not go into their pockets but will be channelled to four beneficiaries.

They are the Tanjong Pagar Family Service Centre, Care Corner Family Service Centre, the Ang Mo Kio Family Service Centre and Shan You Counselling Centre.

Gwyndara International, which brought in the performers with the help of sponsors, hopes that donations from the performances and a gala dinner held last night will raise about $250,000 in all.

Other events lined up include a bash at Zouk next Friday night and a picnic party the next day at MacRitchie Reservoir Park.

ARTy pARTy, organised by the Central Singapore Community Development Council and TheatreWorks, will be held in conjunction with the event on Nov 22-23 at Clarke Quay. It will feature songs, dance, theatre and poetry performances.

For more information about the time and location of the various events, visit www.singapore-buskers.com (http://www.singapore-buskers.com)

First night of the proverbial grind, the "testing the water" shows have come and gone. So far, so good!

But to recount, much of Friday was spent exploring. We went to Chinatown and walked as merchants hawked their wares at us from thier booths. Conrade, Craig and I went to Futama, a shopping centre devoted to electronics. We showed what I believ to be great restraint by not buying anything at all.

Later on, we went on this nighttime safari at the lovely Singapore Zoo and saw all these amazing creatures. Giraffes, rhinos, golden cats (who were having sex at the time, he was really working it too), leopards, Malaysian tigers, and bats. Lots of bats. We went to this room that some of you probably remember where you can actually walk the path through an enclosed area of bats. Marcel led the way bravely, as Kelly and I hunched over and screamed anytime a harmless fruit bat flew anywhere close to us. I'm not sure who it was but I think it might have been Stitch who got peed on by a bat..? Can't remember. I may be wrong, but it sure was funny as hell.

But the shows have been promising.. I was nervous to start but that was rapidly quaffed by the respectful and receptive crowds here. Hopefully it doesn't stop as the week progresses.

Also, it's nice to be around someone who likes the Pet Shop Boys as much as I do. *cough*etienne*cough* biggrin.gif

I'm feeling a good sense of camaderie and as a first-time performer at Singapore have been warmly welcomed, despite the fact that Dynamike and I have been bungling up our room keys, continually locking ourselves out, losing unicycles, blowing things up and just generally causing a very peaceful ruckus.

Anyways, just my 2 cents thus far! smile.gif

Trying not to get caned,
Dan

Here's a little bit of an update thus far- The fest is roughly half over...

Shows have generally been going on and going well. To my knowledge only a handful of shows have been canned, the rain we heard so much about when we were coming here hasn't really shown its head yet. Audiences are respectful and happy to watch, yet they're a little more reserved than North American audiences but that's something I think we're all used to by now.

In terms of memorable experiences, it should be noted that Ryan Whalen has started an epidemic of pole-dancing. Carine kept trying wholeheartedly to show me how to salsa, but I think her efforts were in vain. Jacqui kept getting knocked down, but she got up again. Finally, between Dubbike doing hand plants on the poles and Dan Tastik and I attempting to squeeze our somewhat nimble frames between them, fun was the order of the day.

Many a night has been spent at Chambers thus far, home of the two dollar beer. Anywhere else yields an unsatisfying result of expenses around ten dollars per drink(!).

Etienne and Istvan were summoned the night before to do a TV spot at 7:45 the next morning- Mayhem ensued with Etienne getting no coffee and Istvan perhaps cracking under the pressure of not working in the airport. In all seriousness, all went very well and Etienne did eventually get his coffee.

Today marks the first day I have really slept in late- It's now around 2:30 and we're just stumbling out of bed. This probably is a direct result of Jacqui, Wiebe, Conrade, Paul and I drawing all over Kelly with lipstick and other cosmetics while she slept. She then awoke and without missing a beat, let an expletive fly and realized what had been done. She arose, and Conrade, thinking the fun was over, began to drift off into slumber.

Conrade however, was the next obvious yet unassuming target of our makeup. (and his own vile, vile footwear.) I won't say exactly what happened next, but I will say that the whole scuffle ended on a positive note and again, fun was the order of the evening.

Feeling the love,
Wee Hoo

Well it is HOT HOT HOT out here in Singapore. In five years of performing, I've never BROKEN a microphone with SWEAT!!! Sizes of crowds varies between pitches and the day / time of the week, however they are a WONDERFUL audience. Lots of laughs and great applause.

I would call Singapore "Summer Camp for Street Performers."

"Why?" you ask.

-It's during our vacation season (northern hemisphere anyway)
-We have fun camp councillors (Kelly, Weibe, Marcel) smile.gif
-The cool director and the enthusiatic director (Jimmy & Stephanie)
-We go on field trips (zoo, islands, pole-dancing)
-there are plenty of daytime activities (swimming, gym, juggling)
-shared accomodations (fortunately no bunk beds)
-we all meet at breakfast and are getting to know the cafeteria staff by name.
-No parents!

Despite it being ridiculously hot, and despite my limited experience, this festival has reaffirmed to me all the joys of being a street performer, for many of the reasons Etienne said- It's like a summer camp! The group we have here is really positive, we're all having fun, and I look forward to doing my showsevery night. We may complain about the pitfalls of street performing a lot but right now, I feel truly blessed to love what I do and the people around me. We are a lucky bunch indeed! smile.gif

I'd like to say that performing at this festival has been good, but the greatest thing for me has benn the time I've had to renew my tender affections for Dynamike - what a hunkabodacious man among men. I love him truly with all tha I am.

Dynamike,

Seriously, it was great to work with you and see you in action, you have a fantastic street show and it was a real pleasure to see your show 4 times. Just don't forget your friggin' adaptors / mic!!!

I've just gotten back and am totally screwed up by that horredously long flight, but am still glowing from the absolutely fantastic time I had in Singapore.

I think this discussion shows the relationships we have all gained on this trip. So far, we have learned that Mike and Dan had a room that reaked of "boy sweat". Mike wants to cuddle with Rick. And etienne has a "glow". Maybe I should'nt mention that Gavin after skinny dipping in a fountain, somehow lost his underware out the window of his room and then jumped the 7 stories to retrieve- naked. Sharon, Sharon, Sharon, those are going in the bank. Etienne, its illegal to strip in kareoke bars in Singapore. We all (bus driver included) looked longingly at Ennanon's ass. Countless others.

I look forward to seeing you all again, for the reasons listed above, and because everybody in the cast was alot of fun to be around.

I want also to take the opportunity to let you know that this message has been brought to you by Tiger Beer. Its Tiger Time.

Daniel Craig
11-29-03, 02:48 AM
Wow.

Where to begin? The festival.

The stinky rooms. The wild parties. The slippers in the river. Craig's poor foot. Mike almost swimming in a sewage canal. The drawing with the lipstick on Conrade and Kelly. The endless karaoke sounds. The nudity of Gavin as he struggled to scale a side of the hotel. The parties in 1026 that never seemed to end. The booze that flowed like the river. Etienne RIPPING off his clothes as he sang. The fact it was tiger time, all the time. Daniel Forlano finally making a facial expression. Daniel Oldaker scaling the walls of his room. Dan Tastik and Jebediah getting drunk in the afternoon and staying so all day long. Miracles happen when you're around. Wiebe just being... Well, Wiebe. biggrin.gif

The aftermath. (I only speak for myself and those around me.)

My decision to go to Thailand. The tearful goodbyes. The longtail ride during the storm. Nui, the drunken massage woman on Ko Bulong who Rick later found passed out on her porch. (I don't usually drink, but for you, I will.) The cockroaches. Mark complaining and Rachel.. Just being there. Snugglage. The jug of thai rum or whatever the hell it was? The fact we needed Rick to shake the bags. The fact that I am now stuck in Hat Yai...

Ugh.

So many memories, I hope our paths all cross again. Thank you, cast of Singapore, for giving me a great time.

Heh. I think Dan's still stuck in Hat Yai.

Mike: You are very sweet, and I love you like a brother, but I don't think your family would ever accept our weird, weird love. Ivan, however, still has an "untainted mormon" checkbox on his Singapore hit list.

Hey, I played the board game too. That's the "Strip Settlers" game, right? Man, I was crap at that. Not as bad as Gavin, though. When you lose all your settlements to the plague, not only do they make you strip down to a towel, they make you scale the outside of the Gallery Hotel while wearing it. Crazy.

To everyone at the Singapore festival 2003, thanks for the good times. This really was a great group of cats. See you all again, hopefully. Some of you sooner than others.

Kelly says hello and she loves everyone. We're on an island called Koh Lipeh in Thailand right now, and she can't remember her Pnet password. She'll write when she gets home. She would also like to announce that she has the most luxurious tan of her life. She now resembles not so much a bar of ivory soap as a glass of milk with strawberry Quik in it.

We love you, Kelly. Thanks for helping bring all of us together.

Another couple of memorable experiences include the marriage between Ronald and Leslie on stage (hosted by Dan and Mike OF THE DAN SHOW!) and of course the endless sagas of Marco Polo...

Settlers of Catan and Marco Polo. Life was so simple... biggrin.gif

Thankfully I'm not stranded in Hat Yai anymore. I'm back in Singapore and it feels more familiar than it should, so I strolled down Orchard and made way to the Gallery Hotel. (Going places by myself is a phobia of mine- I'm so scared of getting lost, but it wasn't that bad when I returned.) I was truly saddened by the lack of energy and positive feel at both places... *sigh* Today is the day I leave for home, but I bought the new Pet Shop Boys CD(s) to aide the journey. Etienne, I'm almost 100% confident that you beat me to it. It sure is good though! (Especially the remix of Young Offender on the third disc. When I went into the HMV to buy it, it was playing on their loudsystem throughout the store!)

Rick, I don't usually post on performers.net this often, but for you, I will.

Anticipating -25C weather in shorts and a t-shirt,
Dan

word up posse!

you all rock. Etienne you'll have another chance to play don't fear.

quick little tidbit of gossip/news Dan just called. Apparantly he's in love with me and feels that the two weeks we spent in a boy-sweaty hotel room weren't long enough. Anyway long story short, it was a hard choice but I've made it, and hard as it was I need to say... Sorry Rick (and Etienne and Ivan - and possibly paul - I couldn't tell). Dan is my man. JK

right anyway

rick did that photographer ever give you a cd for me? In fact I guess this is becoming a dialogue between rick and I ot the exclusion of everyone else who may have come here to read something important. my apologies

Rick I'll call

dean I'll call you too

Ivan if I don't call I'll be thinking about you.

Everyone else - thanks for a great time

Kelly - Rock on!

Hey everyone, glad to here you all made it home safely.
I'm still in singapore awaiting another 50 hits with the cane for the naked building climbing. It seems that the local authorities got wind of my exploits and then logged into this site to gather evidence. Apparently they have enough from what you guys said about me to cane me without a trial!!!
The worst thing is that I have a show 3 hours after I arrive back in Perth, and I'll be sporting 1 very sore ass. On the upside, the airline has upgraded me to first class so I can lay on my stomach for the journey home. Now if only I can convince the stewardess to gently massage soothing balms into my backside.
So, other than that, I had a fantastic time with all those Dans and others too. You folks who didn't go to Thailand missed out on the crazy Russians who had invaded 1 part of the Island and had great Djs, pumping sound system and gorgeous Russian BABES !!!!
O oh, they're coming for me now. Think of me next time you sit down, because thats something I won't be doing for a while to come.

Jimmy and the boys were already talking about that before we left, Gav. I wasn't sure whether to warn you or not, but I didn't want to ruin your vacation in Thailand. Good luck with that show,
