comments: hi there
i am doing some research for a seminar at uni on the performativity of performers in the rave culture. I was wandering if you knew of any well known performance groups, that have established shows at raves. Something along the lines of Burningman, but I'd like to look at the actual performance than talk about the spirituality of these shows. Any clues? many thanks.

Dear Jim.
I think someone's having you on.
Personally I doubt she's from any uni on this planet. I mean "performativity" - the word does not exist. And was she "wandering" or wondering I wonder.
Well, I can't help her I'm afraid. Anyone else fancy a shot?
The kids these days... They go to the raves... they do the drugs. They think they can get school credit for it.
Oh well, whatever, nevermind.
Are you telling me that Lurk is not somehow tempted into sending her ten pages of material equal to her request? Probably send her off into some new obscure career path! (Or new drug experience.)

Stung into action Lurk leaps to the keyboard.
Tonka and also Spiral tribe are British outfits that are all over the globe and predate burningman..
As to new drug experiences I recommend fasting for three days, distilling a sufficient amount of mescaline from a San Pedro cactus (write me for details) then giving yourself an enema with the green viscous fluid you have at hand then standing on your head against a wall.
Try and do it somewhere with a wooden floor as carpets are harder to clean.
(It'll give you performitivity right out the ying-yang)

So does she mean to ask if it is possible to perform at "raves" (?performativity?)
Duh, doesn't take a degree to figure that one out. Anyone who has ever attended a "rave" could testify that nearly everyone present is performing in one way or another.
I had the pleasure of performing with Spiral Tribe when they toured North America about 6 years ago. I was involved with an oufit that produced shows for "raves". We did all kinds of cool stuff, black light, fire, giant puppets, stilt creatures, pirotechnics ect... "raves" were fun to do shows at, we didn't spend much rehersal time we would just Jam to the tunes and improvise. Ya the ?performativity? factor was great the challange was working with doubious and cheap promoters. (Been payed with E more times than my spine could handle.)
"Rave Culture" I think your a bit late there sister. "IT" has long been appropraited by the mainstream eons ago. And to call a club or any legally sanctioned space full of pubesent, lollypopsucking, teenyhoppers popping to tired, formulated top 40 beats "CULTURE"
is generous at best.
Wanna see CULTURE (http://www.discobiscuits.com/newsite/lowband/band.html) check out this scene.
(Hey look around and see performers with twirlly fire thingies at their shows!)
One more thing, if you cant get a hold of the varity of cacti that Martin suggested, I have allways found a jalapeno enema to be very spiritually moving.

I don't know why I didn't think of this before, but now while reading Scot's letter I remembered a guy in Barcelona, living out of a converted school bus with his family, and making it his business to put up a huge circus tent on the edge of various cities and host raves there. He would come into Las Ramblas looking for talent to help him set up the scene and then to perform during the parties. He preferred acts that would add to the overall craziness of the atmosphere, ie, fire acts, stilts, etc., as mentioned earlier -- anything likely to enhance the tracer effect of all the drugs.
