Hi, I'm a guitarist & I've played in about every concievable situation & set up there is for regular gigs, but i haven't really tried much busking. I've played on the street, gotten some tips, but it was usually out of boredom or a need to practice, not with an eye to make money - so with due respect I haven't busked. I think I could do ok,I sing pretty well but can play really well and in a way that gets peoples attention.
But here's my question, and I have a feeling i might get slammed but I'll ask it anyway. I have two daughters, 11 & 13 who play violin, flute and sing well. They've been on stage many times and are cool performers but can ham it up when appropriate. They're well-behaved, self-sufficient, and don't get rattled easy. We've been wanting to go to Europe, but can't really afford it so here it is: is there a spoken or unspoken rule about having kids busk with thier parents? I don't hear much about it. I know some people might consider it in poor taste, but I know that my daughters could captivate a crowd (they really are good) in a way that I can't. Besides, if I'm going to perform, what's the point in having them sit around & wait when they could be singing & playing? They've backpacked through England & Scotland with their mother, and we only plan on going for 3 weeks and just hope to defer expenses. I know it's not so simple as find a place to play & people stuff money in your pockets, but we want to at least give it a try next summer.
Does anybody know of any practical or legal reasons why this is a really bad idea? We're going to try it a bit this summer to get some experience. I know we can do a good job (though we may not be savvy enough to make it pay anything) but if someone knows why this is guaranteed disaster I'd like to know. Thanks.
