Default Art

I just read an interesting article, talking about the difference between having an art, or a product. They quote Emerson as saying that art has a relationship with an audience, that a product does not. I think this concept has to factor into performing, because I've seen a lot of buskers who I think have crappy shows that to not build an authentic relationship with their audiences but get big crowds, and collect money from those crowds. I've also seen artists who don't build as big a crowd, but do try to give something authentic of themselves, who don't build the crowds, or collect the large hats. Size and money matters, but it's not the end all be all.
