Commedia dell’Arte Day Sponsored by New Old Theater BALTIMORE, MD, USA - FUN, FREE COMMEDIA DELL’ARTE WORKSHOP FEBRUARY 25, 2010 On February 25, 2010 at 6pm, New Old Theater will participate in a world-wide event to celebrate Commedia dell’Arte with a FREE workshop, Introduction to Commedia dell’Arte. This event will be followed in March 2010 by a series of inspiring, useful, and affordable workshops for performers and aspiring performers; The first Physical Comedy Colloquium; What’s Old is New. Commedia dell'Arte is a living tradition that originated with traveling theater companies in Renaissance Italy. Commedia characters and situations influenced the plays of Shakespeare, Moliere, Goldoni and many others. The influence of Commedia dell’Arte can also be seen in Circus, Vaudeville, silent film comedies, and modern television comedy. This influence and importance is undeniable in the history of world theatre and Western comedy. Commedia dell’Arte Day is proclaimed by the Italian cultural association SAT and coordinated by Faction of Fools Theatre Company in Washington, DC, in support of SAT's appeal to the nation of Italy and to the United Nations (UNESCO) to recognize Commedia dell'Arte as an official piece of "World Cultural Heritage."
