I didn't know him well but two Edmonton fests and some peripherals and it was easy to see he was a deserving fixture and a dedicated lighthearted guy.

Don't have any more details but have this on good authority.

He'll be missed.

I only crossed paths with Hokum twice, but he was always someone I was pleased to see on and off the pitch. I remember in Waterloo 2004, he took me aside and told me that "at these festivals, it's all about the hang."

Having done more festivals and knowing more people now, the times that I recall memories from them have indeed focused on my company. A sad reminder that yes, it is all about the hang, and you can never take seeing someone down the road for granted.

RIP Hokum.

Sad news.
He really was good one. Always full of great stories and original ideas.
I have very fond memories of time spent with him in Edmonton and Vancouver, wandering through junk shops and used book stores.
I'll miss him.

Love One of a kind

Wheeling down roads in heaven
The angels now his crowds
Playing ragtime on his tricycle
Circling in and out of clouds

Default Memorial

Got this information on FB:

Memorial Celebration:

HOKUM W. JEEBS ~ 1950 - 2011

“Be honest and real; it almost always works. If it’s not working, step away gracefully. And never try to teach a pig to sing; it wastes your time, and it annoys the pig.”

Dear Friends and Family,

You were a part of the life of our dear Professor Hokum W. Jeebs. We share your grief as we all mourn his tragic passing.

We would like to invite you to be a part of Hokum’s memorial celebration, to be held at Hale’s Palladium 4301 Leary Way NW in Seattle on Monday, April 11. (Doors open at 6:00, program begins 7-ish.)

Your gift of performance or sharing of thoughts and memories (or both) would be very welcome.

If you are unable to attend but would like to share your thoughts, please send them to the email address below and we will see that they are read at the gathering. We are working on being able to have a “live feed” of the event for those who cannot be there in person (exact details to follow).

Thank you so much for the love you had for Hokum. It’s going to be a GREAT celebration!

Anita Shaffer

Because space is limited, the memorial is by invitation only and we are asking you to RSVP by March 28th, 2011.

For your responses please keep the SUBJECT on any email as Hokum’s Celebration and send it to Shelley Switzer (coordinator for Hokum’s celebration) at producer@edmontonstreetfest.com

1. You will be attending.

2. You would like to bring a guest

3. You would like to perform

4. You would like to be part of the band

5. You would like to speak (bearing in mind that brevity is the soul of wit).

6. You cannot attend but would like info on the “live feed”.

7. You have still photos that you would like to contribute – Please email directly to Doug McKechnie regarding any still pictures – dougmck@pacbell.net

8. You have video that you would like to contribute – please email directly to Alan Plotkin regarding any VIDEO - al@3eventmarketing.com

9. You would like to view and consider adopting some of Hokum’s orphaned possessions. These include musical instruments, costumes, pictures and art, extensive music and reference libraries, wacky vaudeville memorabilia, a wonderful and loving cat, etc, etc. Viewing and adoption opportunities will be by appointment at Hokum and Anita’s West Seattle home on April 10 and April 12.

Love Hallowed Halls

A music man with magic hands
Striking notes you cannot chart
On dishes filled with clacking teeth
Served us laughter á la cart

He serenaded us through mufflers
Sang the blues with a kazoo
His one-man brand of comedy
An Eccentric Music Revue

He dressed himself in ragtime
Tickled ivories with such grace
And entertained so classically
With that smile upon his face

The hallowed halls of heaven
Now echo with the sound
Of wing applauding angels
As Hokum circles round
