Default Walking ladder vs giraffe Unicycle

What are the advantages of one vs the other for street performing?

In favour of the ladder:
I think the ladder is seen less often so appears more novel.
I guess it would also be easier to travel than a Uni.
Possibly more physical comedy opportunitites as it looks like a real object rather than something made for performing.

In favour of the Uni:
The uni can move faster and over a larger area, (eg near the front row) so could have more impact because of the extra movement.
The ground doesn't have to be completely level so could be more practical.
I can already ride a uni so I wouldn't have to learn a new skill (although I enjoy learning new stuff!).

Any other thoughts?

Ladder.
Tall uni shows are old hat.
Ladder could have wheels that attach and be used as a trolley.
Ladder could be held horizontal between 4 volunteers to do stuff on.
Ladder could be used to escape the fire in the backpackers hostel where you might be staying, not to mention changing light bulbs.

Default Ladder VS Uni

Tall Unicycle
1. Attracts more people. A tall unicycle creates more excitement for spectators than a ladder. I have had people want to try ladder no one has ever wanted to try Uni. People perceive that Uni cycle takes more tallent.
2. More trick can be performed on Uni, Ride in circle, Ride Backwards, Idle with one foot.
3. A Nimbus Unicycle can pack smaller than most Ladders. I customize my ladder to break down into 3 pieces so it does pack smaller than a Uni.
4. Safer to fall on unicycle (maybe) If you have a single chain uni I think a ladder is safer.

Ladder

1.Not as many performers use ladders so more of novelty for audience. Seems wrong to be standing on ladder not leaning on something.
2. People have been on ladder does not seem that stable so audience can relate.
3. Don't have to worry about chain grease getting on hands clothes etc.
4. I think a ladder can be more suspenseful. Everyone knows unicycles are made to ride, few know you can balance on ladder.
5. A ladder can be used on not totally even ground but not on grass. I think a tall unicycle is hard to idle on in grass. So to me no advantage to either.

I now use a ladder mostly because its more of novelty and easier to pack.

Hope this helps.

Not to be too cynical. But the one that is the highest!
If you crowd doesnt love you my the time you are getting on your big prop your fucked. If they do love you it doesnt really matter what you do, it only matters how high you can be so more people can see you.

Less cynically..
I use a ladder.
The uneveness of the ground isnt really a big issue.
It is a very useful thing to have with you for all the reasons Gav said.
If it is well designed it is light and breaks down well, but so is a good uni.
Grass can be overcome with a bit of wood. Normally findable in any urban landscape.

Unicycles are cool. Unless there are 4 other ones on the pitch but for my cynical reason stated above that doesnt really matter. However if you are trying to get booked for festivals I would say it probably does.
Unicycles are more mobile compared to a ladder. A bit more dynamic.

I think the audience can relate to both of them. Whilst they can climb a ladder they probably cant walk one. Whilst they can ride a bicycle they probably cant uni.

But the more i think about the more I am sure my cynical answer is the right one.

Default Ladder VS Uni

Performer is the show uni or ladder is just a prop. Prop does not make show performer does. So its really what you performer like because your enthusiasm is what will make show!

I'm currently doing loads of indoor cabaret shows, so I've bought a 5ft ladder to learn on and plan to use it in those shows as a flash opener.
If I like it I think I'll probably get a taller one for outdoor shows.
