Butterfly Street Performers - The Movie

Street Performers - The Movie

Just returned from the initial screening of Chad Taylorís film Ö 5 years (on and off) in the making, itís soon to be submitted to the upcoming Sundance Film Festival. I donít know much about moviemaking, but Iíd be very surprised if it doesnít win some kind of award. It certainly is the best thing Iíve ever seen on the subject so far.

Excellently crafted and edited (currently 59 minutes and 30 seconds), the comedic docu-drama definitely brings elements of the street performerís lifestyle into the mix that have never been addressed before (e.g. growing old). It comprehensibly captures the essence of why we do what we do (deftly touching on who, where and how along the way). It, of course, also has the mandatory ďmoneyĒ thing, (which I, personally, hate to discuss) but I understand why it was included (to satisfy the typically gauche laypersonís curiosity). BTW Bill Ferguson will scream bloody murder when he sees his bit if they donít take it out like I suggested!

Filmed partly in Oslo, Sweden, St. Petersburg, Tokyo, Paris, Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Wellington, NZ as well as assorted other street venues in the US and Canada, it mixes personal commentary from maybe half a dozen to a dozen performers (Robert Shields, Jim Rose, Hotch, Wheeler Cole, Dexter Tripp, Jean Michele and yes, (shudder) even Gazzo with titillating tidbits from a plethora of acts (mostly from the aforementioned cities).

It would be almost impossible for me to list everyone in the film so donít take this as the definitive cast but (besides those already mentioned) those featured include Will Soto, Tic níTac, Mike Davis, Master Lee, Skate Naked, Lucky Rich, A. Whitney Brown, Frankie Olivier, Flyin' Bob, Tom Comet, Karl Saliter, Alex Elixir, Calypso Tumblers, I Bashi I, Spring Action, Lurk, Fungus, Dave Sheridan, Michael Moschen, Nick Nickolas (you look so cute in that tutu Ozzy), Tony Vera (the Fireman), Johnny Fox, Brian Hulse, Alakazam, Dirty Fred and our illustrious administrator, Jim McComb. There are many others in the film as well that are included in sound bites and/or montages, so donít anybody feel left out (until the final edit anyway).
Currently not for sale, I have a feeling Chad wants to find a big time buyer (network?) who will probably PC it down (there is swearing and dangerous shit being done). Letís hope it doesnít get watered down in the process Ö I mean everyone enjoys watching sparklers being stuck up a naked bum, donít they?

If I have any criticism, itís that the true masters of our craft (like KeanO, Pep, Chris Lynam, Jango, Livingspace, Leo Bassi et al.) were not showcased Ö that and the fact that some parts of the world (like Australia, Italy, South America, Belgium, India) were short changed. Also, it seemed to focus primarily on circle shows and left out the musoís, crate slugs and chalk art (sorry Peter)Ö and not a single mention of those beloved Andean bands. Well, I guess he did a pretty good job anyway, despite that fact that he didnít include everybody whoís anybody (Dom, Artis, Checkerhead) and that every (major) pitch wasnít represented either (no Covent Garden, no Ghent, no Circular Quay).

Still, I gotta hand it to the Chad Ö a damn fine job Ö it might not change the worldís perception of street performers (especially in the goddamn US) but it just might give all those punters out there at least a peek into the romantic, yet gritty, reality we gloriously live and breathe every day. I give it 2 thumbs (and one finger for including Gazzo) up.

Lurk halifax?

I always wondered whether the dude who was filming in halifax was part of this operation.
He captured me at my most frustratedly psycotic, (and I have quite a stranglehold on the concept)
I came out of character and threw my hat down after 6 days of being niggled by security guards who had finally called the cops. (i was paid to be there, it shouldn't have been my problem!)
The audience were all going "Its Ok WE won't let them arrest you."
it was the shopowner at the end of the historic sites doing and I'm not going back there until he's dead and i can piss on his grave.
I'm in london, who else is?

Whaddaya mean yer in London? I'm coming home Tuesday, and here I've been planning coffee with you as a bright portion of the returning ritual. damn. Hope Chad didn't put in the part where he asked me what I thought of "love", because I talked about you a lot, you cute little mime.

Nice review, Robert, though he couldn't have included all that and kept it under 2 hours. Can't wait to see it.

Are you serious about this actually being a movie?

Will it be in mainstream movie stores?

Oh, and is it actually Street Performers The movie?

My god this has been a long time in the making....I remember when Chad rolled into town....The arguements, the parties....That was an age....and as much as Chad was a pleasant guy I really remember the godess of a belly dancer who dressed in neon lights...that I take it did not make it to the film??!

Good going Chad, I look forward to seeing it!!!

thanks for reporting this baculum appreciator!

cheers, Whaleman

Lurk Dukes of Haggard

"Mad Chad" just called to say the movie is done ... finally!

We are all so old now it might be difficult to recognize anyone (except Gazzo, he's the one drooling).

He says the initial public screening went well and he will have the premier in about a month (in LA).

Lots of streetperformer films have come and gone since this project started ... Chad's film, however, rocks ... or what I saw of it (awhile back) did.

Interestingly enough, one of the editors for Spiderman (Shawn Valla) did the editing for Chad ... he might be the reason for making it look so cool.

I will post anything more I find out about the project here.

Hat this just in ...

Just a note from Mad Chad re that film he did oh so long ago ...

"Bob Mendelsohn is composing music (to dub over some unroyalty busker usage) .... and then it's done."

Sure Mad 1 ... I'll believe THAT!

P.S. He's calling it "Buskers" now ... I think.

Damn, I hope to see that thing before I end up in "Curtain Calls"!

I want to see how the bit with the guy pushing Hotch pans out.
Looks like Abi steps in to save him maybe.

Default Buskers - The Movie

What's the status of the movie?

Wondering if Chad could post something himself? Or has he already?

Club zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Talked to Chad ... here's the scoop ... movie audio was just completed last week ... the film is not for sale until the next 12 film festivals accept or reject it ...

Sundance and Slamdance both unfortunately turned it down ...

He did say he'd send a copy to me but that I can't duplicate it ...

Funny he should say that ... I didn't complain when he used my lines on Venice Beach

Thumbs Up Congrats Mad Chad ... you've done us proud.

So ... I just saw it ... WOW ... much much different than what I saw way back when ... WOW ... got to say ... much much better than what I saw way back when ... a whole new twist ... making us human ... never thought of that ... WOW ... this is the 1st time I've seen Gazzo when he didn't suck.

P.S. Jim... are you OK? ... that must have hurt!

Chad put my fall in there? Yes it did hurt. I landed on my transmitter and tweaked my back. That was in Windsor, and you were there! Don't you remember that massage you gave me in the back of your van? I was OK after that.

I've fallen from my rola bola about 5 times in performance since 1993. Three of those falls happened in Windsor. Something about that parking lot...

When can we get a copy of this damn movie????
