Default Free Website hosting

This is gonna make me look like an amateur, but whatever. Does anyone know good free website hosting system. I've checked out
www.freewebs.com
www.geocities.com
www.bravenet.com

I don't know which one is best. I can't afford an actual site so I'll have to make do.

You're gonna be hard up to find a host that will support a lot of features and a pile of visitors, but to get started, you can use http://www.doteasy.net
It's free with no banners, popups, or other crap. If you want to pay for some hosting with great benefits and terrific support go to SheerGenius. They host my site. It's president@sheergenius.com .

A domain name like 'jugglegood.com' can cost you money, so wouldn't it be great if there was a free one you could get? Well, there is... http://www.dot.tk/ You don't get the posh ".com" but you get it free and beggars can't be choosers.

Saving money where you can is very professional.

Also consider, you're gonna still have to design the site or pay someone to do it for you. So, here's my cheapo way to do it:

Pay a photographer ( a good one [look at their work] ) to take photos of you. Figure out how to make a site with text and featuring these photos. Warning! do not use other images. Just photographer's pics. Your text should be scant -- like two short paragraphs per page. Two sentences per paragraph, 4 pages.

It will take a lot of work just to do this so simply. When you go to the photographer, have pictures that convey the style you want. Figure out how you want to describe your show, then find magazine ads and covers that shout your description like (young, exciting, dangerous, etc.)

Try to think ahead of the photographer, and buy him lunch. (total should be less than $300). Treat him really nicely, and never say you don't know what you want. If something doesn't turn out the way you like, don't complain. Figure out how to solve the problem, or take it as a learning experience.

Be clean, if you have a girl that will help you with makeup, get that done (so you don't shine), cut and file your nails.

After the shoot, you can post your pictures here, and Eric and I will tell you how to fix them. Remember, the photos are the most important part of your site. After, that, keeping it simple and straightforward will make you look more pro than most variety performers.

Here are some examples of what your site will look like:

That's all good advice (I knew there was a reason we keep Scot around, now I just have to find my own justification), however, Scot, did you notice that Tyler is 15 years old? He should take your advice, but honestly, it doesn't matter at this point, the little bastard is goin to wind up knowing more at 18 than we do now. Screw him.

Default website

I would suggest staying away from the free hosts that have pop up banners on them, it is the most annoying thing to go to a site and have a stupid pop up thrown at you every few secconds.
find a low cost host for your first one.

www.onedollarhosting.com I think is a good place to begin.

they have an initial set up fee of... $49.00
but after that it is 1 dollar per month to host your site.
renewable every year at that low low price of just $12.00
but wait there's more....

no sorry there is no more, that's it really.

Default ... and now: the Dog and Pony show

Grouph!!! Just website rambling here. As I have no one in real life to share this with, well ... you see where this is going ...

I've been on the phone with a couple of agents. The result? I'm doing serious design changes to my website -- making it less an individual's website and more a professional promotional website.

I had 1 agent tell me "Since it usually takes 3-4 months to get your web designer to change things as drastically as they need to be done, I don't expect to hear from you again for a while." I guess his ears were broken when I told him that among the degrees I hold is 1 in programming. The agent who took a look at my site that evening thought it was nicely done and well on it's way! Just need some headshots (hopefully next week) for the Home Page.

... and the saga continues ...

You need mostly a degree in graphic design plus experience plus, you need experience in website programming. There's a lot of work to be done on your site for real.

I think it took 4-5 months for my first website and I did it myself.

Do some work, then post here for our harsh criti.

Angry Let's try to increase the literacy rate

"There's a lot of work to be done on your site for real."

Okay, apparently, you didn't read what I wrote.

I MADE THE CHANGES HE TOLD ME TO ALREADY. ALL I NEED NOW ARE HEAD SHOTS WHICH I WILL HOPEFULLY GET NEXT WEEK TO POST ON THE HOME PAGE.

There. I hope that was loud enough.

And for god's sake ... don't tell me what degrees I need and what experience I need when you don't know what I've got.

Sheeesh!!!

Hey, don't bite the hand that critiques you. Scot was just trying to be helpful, and I'll guarantee he's talking from a position that can be very helpful. It doesn't matter how many degrees you have if your website looks like it was designed by a blind monkey with an iBook. And it does.
Sheesh with the people not being able to take criticism.

I give up.

Here's my badge and my uniform, I !@#?in' quit.

FYI Scot IS illiterate, and if I was picking on somebody, they'd !@#?ing KNOW it.

P.S. Robert, the last time I "picked" on you, you threw a fit. Does that mean I win? Here's my drunken philosophical for the evening kids, humans are !@#?ed, buy a rifle and shoot any one of them that comes within 200 yards. You'll be much happier.

Heh, a microscopic portion of my faith in humanity was just restored as I noticed that Woofnah has more pictures of her pets on her website than of herself. I can still be charmed by creatures too dumb for ego.
O.K., you live.

Default criti -- According to Merriam Webster

criti: singular of critus

The basics of what I was saying were, it will take more knowledge and more time than you think, if you want it to look good. Right now it doesn't look good.

Tips for the current site:
- Get a domain name
- Put your menu together (there are huge line breaks)
- Don't use times font
- Dont use normal link colors
++To change this, Ms. Programmer, put link= and then the color in quotes in your body tag. same with vlink=
- don't use a stock or stolen background like the escher one you now have. Make one or use none.
- the best photos you have on the site are the plungers at xmas and 4 clubs at a fest. That's not to say they're good photos.
- Most people don't know that John Satriano is a famous juggler. Captions are supposed to help describe the picture.
- Your alternate resume is better but not good
- Bio is too personal, too long, and too first person. I didn't read it so, can't tell you the other stuff... Oh, an ad for your juggling club?
- don't use bright red text for anything ever.

Simply fix these things and get a ton of good photos. Then, we'll do some more work.

Robert is wrong to call you a monkey. I think he was just joking. Sometimes his jokes can be tactless. Don't take offense.

Default Thanks for the input

"- Get a domain name"

Can't afford it yet. Will do when I can.

"- Put your menu together (there are huge line breaks)"

Those were intentional. As per the input from 2 agents.

"- Don't use times font"

Okay. I'll change that.

"- Dont use normal link colors "

Color issues: The only colors I can see are bright red, bright blue, black, and bright purple. This sort of limits what I can use.

"- don't use a stock or stolen background like the escher one you now have. Make one or use none."

Actually, this was something the agent loved. He told me to keep this.

"- the best photos you have on the site are the plungers at xmas and 4 clubs at a fest. That's not to say they're good photos."

Head shots will be forthcoming. And I'm pretty sure the posed shot that's on my "resume" page is good.

"- Most people don't know that John Satriano is a famous juggler. Captions are supposed to help describe the picture."

Most non-jugglers don't know ANY of those people.

"- Your alternate resume is better but not good"

Kay. What is bad about it. What needs changing?

"- Bio is too personal, too long, and too first person. I didn't read it so, can't tell you the other stuff... Oh, an ad for your juggling club?"

I started it. I'm the best juggler there (which is pretty pathetic). Without me it doesn't exist.

"- don't use bright red text for anything ever."

Back to my color issues mentioned above.

"Simply fix these things and get a ton of good photos. Then, we'll do some more work."

Head shots are forthcoming. There seems to be something wrong in the photo translation on geocities. The pictures look good (to me at least so that's not saying very much) when they stand alone. When I put them on the page they look distorted (to me). Hopefully this will change when I can afford my own domain name and pay for a site.

"Robert is wrong to call you a monkey. I think he was just joking. Sometimes his jokes can be tactless. Don't take offense."

I believe Eric was the one who called me blind monkey. Robert merely pointed out to him that I am, indeed, blind. And decended from monkeys, as per Mr. Charles Darwin.

Thank you very much for the actual critiques. These are much more helpful than just saying "it's bad, fix it".

Question Have to admit confusion here

"- Don't use times font"

Okay. I'll change that.

You know what? It's *never* been times font. I can't utilize fonts with serifs. It's Arial. It's always been Arial. I just double checked my coding and it is, indeed, still Arial.

Default Summary I think

What I'm seeing is that just a few changes need to be made:

1. Alter pictures:
-- Home page, remove all, add forthcoming Headshot
-- Links page, change middle picture
-- Bio page, change bottom 2
-- Resumes, remove all pics (?)

2. Resumes: remove links to websites for events (?)

3. Alter font: style and colors (?)
-- need to find unusual font that is legible
-- what colors go with a grey background?

4. It is preferable to onlookers to *not* have the gaps in the menus (?) as opposed to the agents who wanted them. This will need thinking about to find an acceptible compromise

5. Shorten bio

Anything else I'm missing?
