Default Burning DVDs

I am burning my own Promo Dvds.
I check each one on the computer and two DVD players to be sure they are working and compatable.
I seem to have shit luck with any brand of DVD except for Sony.
So I guess I'll just stick to Sony.
Anyone else run into this kind of thing or have any ideas?

do you know the difference between +r and -r? My computer can't burn +r, only -r. most brands seem to work fine for me though.

You may be on to something.
I can burn both but the ones that work in both DVD players are '+R" and the ones that don't are "-R".
So i guess the Brand had nothing to do with it, its the +/-.
Guess I'll stick to the +.
But for the sake of asking whats the differance?
Good thing no ones life depends on my powers of observation.

Dear Lord,

What authoring / duplication software are you using, because you've actually got that backwards:

+R and +RW are incompatible with many DVD players.

I've been doing editing / production work at a local TV station and we burn ONLY onto -R. My own promo DVD is on -R and it has not been bounced by any DVD players so far. I used iDVD on a mac G5 to do the authoring and I use their duplication machine to runs copies.

(the difference is that +r can do dual layered recording and -r cannot. RW means you can continually add data to the DVD)

Well all of this has led my deep in to the hart of "Nerdville", but I made it back out.
Here is a very wordy articile that contains some good info on DVD compatability.
http://www.dvdtoday.com/Recordable%20DVD%20Test.htm
And it does look as though DVD-R is the better bet. I must have just "un-lucked" out that one of my players is incompatable.

Here is another dumb installment to my questions:
Will one of these (-R +R etc...) burn faster then the others or does that all depend on the burner and programe?

It depends on the burner & the length of the content .

OK I guess I have one more dumb question.
All told I have about an 45 minutes worth of video on the DVD ( Indoor promo, Outdoor promo, 1/2hour full indoor theater show, and a little teaser just showing the swords go in and out) as a ballpark figure how long would y'all guess it should take to burn?

Well, using iDVD, that would take about 20-25 minutes to burn the master and then using the duplication machines about 5 minutes for each copy (burning 6 discs at once).

Are you doing a format like this:

When dvd first is inserted the little teaser plays, then the menu comes up featuring your different promos + a full show? There's also neat things you can do like have a slide show, or a contact page.

5 minutes seems right, last week any way. But when i went to start burning more copies yesterday it had slowed way down, almost like I was rendering it all over again, about 90 minutes. Oh well thats a problem in the computer and I'll keep screwing with it. The drivers are up to date so its something else.

I actually have the teaser set aside as a seperate title I hadn't thought of using it as the intro. Could be an idea. I'll give it a try. Thanks

Default all is well

The reason things had slowed down so much, sending me into a state, is because in dealing the the troubles of one of my sons video games the firmware had been messed with.
Updated driver and all is well.
Burning fast and playing on all players.
Sellectomy out!
