You'll find it tough to do shows in Old Town - I've been through there and unless it's a holiday or special event - there's not a whole lot of foot traffic.
Santa Fe has a nice plaza area with space and foot traffic, but I've only been there for pleasure and never did work there. San Antonio, TX Old Town is good (walking distance to the Riverwalk area)- I've performed there on weekends and had good crowds. Or if it's LA-Kansas you're talking about, try Boulder, CO. You can get a street performing license on arrival.

I reside in the suburbs of ABQ.
Old Town is tricky, unless you hit up one of the many fine restaurants and businesses there. They do frown on just performing on the sidewalks or gazebo area. The University area (further West on Central) is more accepting, but then again, it's a college area and tips may not be what they are in more touristy areas. Nob Hill (further west on Central Ave.) has lots of great shops, including The Magic Juggler Shop, one of the better magic shops in the southwest. October is a good time to visit Albuquerque because of the International Balloon Fiesta, a huge hot air balloon fly-in, which attracts thousands and thousands. The Downtown also has the Spring and Fall Pub Crawls, the streets are closed off and it gets pretty crowded. ABQ has a pretty diverse crowd of magicians, musicians, clowns, jugglers and other artsy types for a town its size.
